chapter 3:Sharpen your Axe - Theory
It was Sunday morning. Sumit to his surprise exclaimed “Oh ho bhaiya, so your up today early in the morning” watching Amit exercising push ups with his legs supported on the bed. “Ya, ya. Is dad calling? Mom?” Amit asked. “No” he spoke in a humorous tone “Why, and what did you decide about the job?”
“That’s none of your business. Go away. Don’t disturb me” spoke Amit in a commanding tone. The reason for his getting up early was something else. His anxiety had not let him sleep properly last night always desiring to meet the next morning. He was ready by eight in the morning.
It was a very old building of two floors. Seemed never been painted again since it was constructed. It proudly stood beside the ring road which met at a distance to the National highway no 8. He had rode 15 km’s to reach the place. With hardly any proper parking place, he rested the racer in front of a grocer shop at the zero floor of the building.
While climbing the stairs he felt more and more nervous feeling the same when he approached Swati in the canteen with the will to propose her for the first time.
The door opened within no time he rang the bell, Sameer stood right in the front as if waiting for him since long. “Come in, Amit” he welcomed. He was wearing loose attire which complimented his athletic body. Guiding his spectacles on the face he said “Is it ok if we proceed to my room.” Hovering at the attractive drawing room filled with excessive paintings of the modern era, contrasting the color of the wall, and trying to recollect his last visit to Sameer’s dwelling he affirmed “Ya, why not” adding “The interiors chosen are excellent”
“Thanks” feeling esteemed he replied.
It was poured by a light yellow shared with something similar to orange color; Sameer’s bed room was barely one hundred square feet. It was a complete changeover to the last one he visited. Before he could investigate further Sameer asked “Shall we begin?” “Ya” he replied.
“Just brief me about the job you are going to face the interview for.” He asked.
“Well, that’s a multinational into the field of fabrication having their manufacturing facilities at the outskirts of Baroda. Nothing more I know.”
“Ok, I will share with you some of my experiences. Also, some of the learning in the last four years - either from some great intellectual professionals or through my own experience.”
“Yes please, I am obliged” Amit replied happily.
“There was a huge forest in the north of India” he began “As a part of industrial development some very old tress in the middle of the forest were to be cut down to make a path which would lead to a very big soap factory.
With no time left to take actions, a minister visiting the site, the demolition had to be done in next 10 hours.
Two wood cutters were called; each handed over half the job explaining the situation. Two supervisors were appointed to monitor the job ensuring the quality and quantity of the job done in the schedule. The next day when the minister came he found one side posh clean and ready to be worked on, while the other was half done. He asked the officer for an explanation.
“Hey, Samir” he paused him in the middle “It seems you are narrating some story from Panchatantra” grinning he stood up. “I thought you will be suggesting some good actions to carry on with wisdom at all times” pointing at a saying hanging on his wall which read “Successful people don’t do different things, they do things differently”
“I was very impressed by the way you have designed your room. It’s ornamental, with all what excites to be successful in your carrier. Also, with your dynamic personality and how you carry yourself, which I noticed at our reunion.” he explained.
He gave an innocent smile thinking how Amit was getting impatience but was also happy to discover a strong will within him to learn. “I can judge your excitement about what all you expect. But do listen to this story. You will come to know the importance after its over.” “Ok, carry on” he replied in a confused state of mind.
He continued ……..
The officer called both the supervisors asking for a report. The report was divided in two parts as below:
A. Investigation
1. The first wood cutter was very industrious and knew what he wanted. He started the work as soon as it was assigned.
2. The second wood cutter seemed lazy. He was not seen around the place for the first five hours.
B. Results
1. It was found that the first wood cutter had completed the job 60% .He had mentioned the reason being shortage of time.
2. The second wood cutter had completed the job 100% with 10 minutes spared. There was no need to ask for an explanation. He got an appreciation from the supervisors.
This was surprising for the officer. He thought there was some mistake in the report. The data was either replaced. He somehow managed to convince the minister about completion of the pending job.
“Yes, he is right. There is some mistake in the report” Amit once again lost his patience “How can that lazy woodcutter complete the job and not the industrious one”
Samir took a deep breath and continued…..
The officer also was wondering the same. After the minister left, he went to the second wood cutter’s house and what he discovered was shocking.
He revealed him the secret what he did those initial five hours when he was not present in the forest.
The data he had collected:
a. No of trees = 60
b. No of axe’s he had = 10
c. Time taken to cut a tree = 10 min (with quality of the
edge of his axe’s at that time)
d. Time taken to cut a tree if the edge an axe is sharpened
for an hour = 5 min (i.e. 50 % improvement in
efficiency)
e. No of axles to sharpen the axe = 2
His calculation:
Time required to sharpen total 10 axes = 5
Time required to cut total 60 trees = d x a = 5x60 =
330 min = 5 hours
Total time taken = time to sharpen axe + time to cut trees
= 5 + 5 = 10 hours.
Thus, he was able to accomplish his job in required time.
“Genius” Amit expressed standing up in appreciation.
“ Yes” Samir explained “IF YOU HAVE TEN HOURS TO CUT THE FOREST SHARPEN YOUR AXE FOR FIVE HOURS”
“But what went wrong with the first wood cutter” he asked.
He did not planned his job. Because of which he was not sure when he would complete it. He used to cut two tress and then go back to sharpen his axe. Which took maximum of his time. Thus, finished it 60% only.”
Stanley Judd says - “A good plan is like a road map: it shows the final destination and usually the best way to get there.” also
“Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.” - Tom Landry
He could now understand the reason why Samir told that story. “So you wanted me plan before I get into the job”
“Exactly” you are on the right track “HE WHO FAILS TO PLAN, PLANS TO FAIL”
Samir explained “Elaborating on Zig Ziglar’s words – ‘You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win’. I want you to first plan about how to face the interview for this job. Though you got the offer from a reference, it shouldn’t be treated lightly.”
“Yes, I will do that” he exclaimed.
“Just prepare a list of questions what you anticipate” saying he looked at the clock, it was already lunch time.
“Hey C’mon. Let’s have lunch. Mom has prepared your favorite sezwan.” He invited Amit

This little piece of work's narration style is entertaining with a moral. The little elements that pitch in the story make it sound better and natural circumstances. A very important lesson to Plan ones Plan...great!!
