Well this is a previous chapter and after some time I will be posting another one where the co-reation between all three can be understood.
The long wait – Dairy Den Circle

The dusk had begun to fade with the chilly breeze playing with the uncommon noises at the place. The students, hawkers and people at the place all were enjoying as usual. Diwali was nearby uplifting the spirits of the Barodians, letting the Holiday’s to be the talk of the town.

The place around an ancient but unnoticed circle at a traffic junction called the Dairy den circle was thronged with the young crowd. Almost opposite to one of the oldest and known MS University tomb of the country, the circle had well managed to collect the young Barodians to make a hot spot. The evergreen fashioned navy blue fade jeans topped by the long and weary hairy heads could be well noticed.

He was constantly staring at his watch which could no way run faster than his heart beats. Sober but casually dressed Amit still had a lot to discover in his so called career. Steaming thoughts drenched him all the way which left his face crimson and confused. Even the hot girls around could not evade the thoughts in his mind generated by his last conversation with Samir. The running time and the dense crowd all reminded him of anxiety he experienced all life before his do or die situations in the exams. The long wait – Dairy Den Circle

The running time and the dense crowd all reminded him of anxiety he experienced all life before his do or die situations in the exams.

Amit from a well settled upper middle class family in Baroda was brought with all the fun and care the best of parents could have rendered. Though being the eldest of the two brothers he never felt the pressure from the parents to earn at any moment. His father and mother both working with private firms had ever longed to criticize the stud. Accented with good communication skills and convent culture in his schooldays had managed to be in the cream list of the SSC results. Six feet tall with average physique and converging face, he gave a look of the modern guys having no vision in life. Aggressive in attitude. Built up rapport with friends, he also saluted the rally of internet addicts followed by his strong competition with GPRS on his mobile and his newly wedded passion, riding his 150 CC stunning Pulsar into the wild streets of the day by day overcrowding city. At 24, he had all the ingredients required to mesmerize beauties backing his roller coaster city rides. What else a young lad dreamt of loaded with all these accessories. But, the fable had steep turns in the graced paths.
Amit goes into flash back………………
“Dad’s calling you in the drawing room” a shrill and echoing voice went of hitting again and again. Opening the eyes with surprise, Amit waked up after hearing from his young brother. The voice rallied again “C’mon wake up Amit, Dad’s calling” and “What is it so early in the morning?” he asked forcing his eyes to wide open who were denying to do so. “I don’t know, but he seems a bit anxious” whispered Sumit, the younger brother. “As usual” he muttered not bothering. “Mom’s along with him waiting for you” concluding Sumit left the room. This was little alarming. “What must be it?” he asked himself “No accidents, no late nights last week, nothing…?”, “Diwali planning, cousin’s marriage…” such thoughts raided his mind. After a little pondering on the topics he decided to surrender.

Amit was ready within next 15 minutes. The stage was set. The parents sitting together on red sofa revealed the preachers waiting for the student to teach a lesson. Amit had no idea what the next half an hour would bring in his life.
“Come sit near me. We need to talk” called a voice which left Amit perplexed once again standing right at the entrance of the drawing room. It was Dad. “Amit come here” before he could say something, called the mother.

“I wont beat about the bush” told Dad “ Your mother has come across a job for you in an engineering company, a multinational. They are into fabrication business.” “It’s a good job to start with. This will help you to keep busy also” added mother.
“I am not idle. I have a lot of things to do. Whatever, but I am not interested. I will do my own business.” Amit answered in a hurry.
“Yes, we know what all you do the whole day. Its time to plan your career son.” Dad responded. “Learn from your friend Samir. Think about all your cousins. All working.”
Mom clarified the topic.
“No Dad, let me think for some time” he replied opposing as if he was forced to dive in a well.
“How much time do you want. And what Business can you do. You’re just a kid. You know nothing.” angrily replied Dad. The conversation heated up and some how Amit was successful to let the tycoon settle down that time. But he knew it could not be suppressed for longer. He had no plans for any business but he had expressed his desire of nowhere, just to let the matter cool down.

Amit had nothing striking in his mind how to curb the matter. Thus lost in the thoughts of his college days he just layed on his bed. After scoring well in the SSC he was suggested by his parents to join a Diploma course in Mechanical Engineering of which he had never heard of .Without any hesitation he was ready to follow his parents. But after joining the course for two years he considered himself to be underprivileged. The thoughts which most bothered him were the dirty and noisy industries in which he would have to work after the course. This would drive back all his energy and enthusiasm who always dreamt of a white collar job and rewarding career. Moreover, polytechnic had the worst of the chicks to play on with. He literally went through the worst of his life and considered those three years as a setback to his career. Something to adore were his two friends whom he met during these years. The most common between the three of them was
they all had the same perception about their college and life. Feeling depressed they all were attracted towards the leisure’s leaving behind the hard work required to study. Bunking classes, watching movies and playing around in the campus were part of there routine. But as luck favored these, got passed the exams in single trials not even dreaming to make it anyhow in the merit list. In the last semester of their course Amit was fifth from the bottom and Vicky the second last. Sameer was the luckiest not be in the last ten but no way near the merit list.

‘Thud’, the door opened and mom was standing in front. It was almost lunch time which he didn’t realized sailing in his thoughts. “C’mon. The lunch is ready. Dad’s waiting”.
“Am not feeling hungry. You people carry on.”
“No, Amit. Its Sunday and we always had our lunch together. Don’t worry dear. Dad won’t talk on the topic.”
That day Amit felt nothing exciting. The lunch also had no great taste. Even he fought with his girlfriend, who for no reasons was punished on her birth day. With no plans to put before parents he decided to show off his cards like a thief caught red handed stealing just a piece of bread. Brutally sacrificing desires, he felt falling in a deep ocean which opened its arm to give a never returning welcome.
Watching his favourite wrestling on the pc he subconsciously desired of speaking to Vicky & Samir.

Samir was the one among these three to be selected in the campus. With handsome salary and commanding position he was on a Ferrari ride, knocking behind all the top notch scholars of the college. Shocking was his success for all. Not even Amit or Vicky had any expectations of him stealing the show, rising from the dust. “Samir has turned arrogant.” was the topic of main discussion in the whole campus. But Amit and Vicky were happy about him and knew the truth. Vicky belonging to a lower class family with tremendous pressure to earn his living some how managed to find a job of few bugs satisfying himself.

But Amit’s Dad had some other plans in his mind. He wanted him to pursue Engineering and with his affirmation got him admitted in the college at Belgam.

chapter 3:Sharpen your Axe - Theory

It was Sunday morning. Sumit to his surprise exclaimed “Oh ho bhaiya, so your up today early in the morning” watching Amit exercising push ups with his legs supported on the bed. “Ya, ya. Is dad calling? Mom?” Amit asked. “No” he spoke in a humorous tone “Why, and what did you decide about the job?”

“That’s none of your business. Go away. Don’t disturb me” spoke Amit in a commanding tone. The reason for his getting up early was something else. His anxiety had not let him sleep properly last night always desiring to meet the next morning. He was ready by eight in the morning.

It was a very old building of two floors. Seemed never been painted again since it was constructed. It proudly stood beside the ring road which met at a distance to the National highway no 8. He had rode 15 km’s to reach the place. With hardly any proper parking place, he rested the racer in front of a grocer shop at the zero floor of the building.
While climbing the stairs he felt more and more nervous feeling the same when he approached Swati in the canteen with the will to propose her for the first time.

The door opened within no time he rang the bell, Sameer stood right in the front as if waiting for him since long. “Come in, Amit” he welcomed. He was wearing loose attire which complimented his athletic body. Guiding his spectacles on the face he said “Is it ok if we proceed to my room.” Hovering at the attractive drawing room filled with excessive paintings of the modern era, contrasting the color of the wall, and trying to recollect his last visit to Sameer’s dwelling he affirmed “Ya, why not” adding “The interiors chosen are excellent”
“Thanks” feeling esteemed he replied.

It was poured by a light yellow shared with something similar to orange color; Sameer’s bed room was barely one hundred square feet. It was a complete changeover to the last one he visited. Before he could investigate further Sameer asked “Shall we begin?” “Ya” he replied.

“Just brief me about the job you are going to face the interview for.” He asked.
“Well, that’s a multinational into the field of fabrication having their manufacturing facilities at the outskirts of Baroda. Nothing more I know.”

“Ok, I will share with you some of my experiences. Also, some of the learning in the last four years - either from some great intellectual professionals or through my own experience.”

“Yes please, I am obliged” Amit replied happily.

“There was a huge forest in the north of India” he began “As a part of industrial development some very old tress in the middle of the forest were to be cut down to make a path which would lead to a very big soap factory.

With no time left to take actions, a minister visiting the site, the demolition had to be done in next 10 hours.

Two wood cutters were called; each handed over half the job explaining the situation. Two supervisors were appointed to monitor the job ensuring the quality and quantity of the job done in the schedule. The next day when the minister came he found one side posh clean and ready to be worked on, while the other was half done. He asked the officer for an explanation.

“Hey, Samir” he paused him in the middle “It seems you are narrating some story from Panchatantra” grinning he stood up. “I thought you will be suggesting some good actions to carry on with wisdom at all times” pointing at a saying hanging on his wall which read “Successful people don’t do different things, they do things differently”

“I was very impressed by the way you have designed your room. It’s ornamental, with all what excites to be successful in your carrier. Also, with your dynamic personality and how you carry yourself, which I noticed at our reunion.” he explained.

He gave an innocent smile thinking how Amit was getting impatience but was also happy to discover a strong will within him to learn. “I can judge your excitement about what all you expect. But do listen to this story. You will come to know the importance after its over.” “Ok, carry on” he replied in a confused state of mind.

He continued ……..

The officer called both the supervisors asking for a report. The report was divided in two parts as below:

A. Investigation

1. The first wood cutter was very industrious and knew what he wanted. He started the work as soon as it was assigned.
2. The second wood cutter seemed lazy. He was not seen around the place for the first five hours.

B. Results

1. It was found that the first wood cutter had completed the job 60% .He had mentioned the reason being shortage of time.
2. The second wood cutter had completed the job 100% with 10 minutes spared. There was no need to ask for an explanation. He got an appreciation from the supervisors.

This was surprising for the officer. He thought there was some mistake in the report. The data was either replaced. He somehow managed to convince the minister about completion of the pending job.

“Yes, he is right. There is some mistake in the report” Amit once again lost his patience “How can that lazy woodcutter complete the job and not the industrious one”

Samir took a deep breath and continued…..

The officer also was wondering the same. After the minister left, he went to the second wood cutter’s house and what he discovered was shocking.

He revealed him the secret what he did those initial five hours when he was not present in the forest.

The data he had collected:

a. No of trees = 60
b. No of axe’s he had = 10
c. Time taken to cut a tree = 10 min (with quality of the
edge of his axe’s at that time)
d. Time taken to cut a tree if the edge an axe is sharpened
for an hour = 5 min (i.e. 50 % improvement in
efficiency)
e. No of axles to sharpen the axe = 2

His calculation:

Time required to sharpen total 10 axes = 5
Time required to cut total 60 trees = d x a = 5x60 =
330 min = 5 hours

Total time taken = time to sharpen axe + time to cut trees
= 5 + 5 = 10 hours.

Thus, he was able to accomplish his job in required time.

“Genius” Amit expressed standing up in appreciation.

“ Yes” Samir explained “IF YOU HAVE TEN HOURS TO CUT THE FOREST SHARPEN YOUR AXE FOR FIVE HOURS”

“But what went wrong with the first wood cutter” he asked.
He did not planned his job. Because of which he was not sure when he would complete it. He used to cut two tress and then go back to sharpen his axe. Which took maximum of his time. Thus, finished it 60% only.”

Stanley Judd says - “A good plan is like a road map: it shows the final destination and usually the best way to get there.” also
“Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.” - Tom Landry
He could now understand the reason why Samir told that story. “So you wanted me plan before I get into the job”

“Exactly” you are on the right track “HE WHO FAILS TO PLAN, PLANS TO FAIL”

Samir explained “Elaborating on Zig Ziglar’s words – ‘You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win’. I want you to first plan about how to face the interview for this job. Though you got the offer from a reference, it shouldn’t be treated lightly.”

“Yes, I will do that” he exclaimed.

“Just prepare a list of questions what you anticipate” saying he looked at the clock, it was already lunch time.

“Hey C’mon. Let’s have lunch. Mom has prepared your favorite sezwan.” He invited Amit
